Licensing & Renewal

  • Licensure is required in order to practice as a SLP or work as a SLPA in the United States.
  • State Renewal is required every 2 years and CEU’s are needed. State requirements vary state to state.


Duties

  • Speech-language pathologists (sometimes called speech therapists) assess, diagnose, treat, and help to prevent communication and swallowing disorders in children and adults.

Education and Requirements

  1. Complete a master's or doctoral degree from a CAA-accredited institution. (Communication Disorders)
  2. Complete a clinical fellowship of at least 36 weeks that is mentored by an ASHA-certified speech-language pathology professional. (CCC-SLP)
  3. Pass the Praxis II: Subject Assessment in Speech-Language Pathology.
